The Elkader Historical Society preserves the history of the community with records and artifacts from the area's past. Formed in the early 1970's, the Society established a permanent home with the 1983 purchase and restoration of the Carter House, a National Register Historic Site home which the Society transformed into a museum with a collection of furniture, clothing, and artifacts from the 19th century. In 1993 an annex was added to allow more display space. Since the Carter House is a private museum, fund-raising events are an important part of the museum's schedule and the community's social life. Membership in the Society is open to all and volunteer museum guides are always welcome.
