• Regular City Elections - Nov. 3, 2015

One of the most challenging and exciting responsibilities an individual can assume is to become a council member or mayor. The business of city government and local leadership presents a unique opportunity to resolve issues, accomplish goals, and affect the future of your community.

Tuesday, November 3, 2015 is election day for regular city elections. Polls open at noon. The City of Elkader has two council seats as well as the Mayor's seat on the ballot. Those seats are currently held by Bob Garms (Mayor), Rob Frieden and Peggy Lane.

Monday, August 24th is the first day candidates may begin to file papers with the County Auditor (hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Please note that is new this year. Papers can only be filed with the County Auditor's office so please give yourself plenty of time. Thursday September 17th at 5:00 p.m. is the last day.

All terms are for four years. Those interested in running must complete and submit two forms: 1) Affidavit of Candidacy and 2) Nomination petition. The Nomination petition must be signed by no less than 10 residents of the City of Elkader.

To be eligible to run for a city office, a candidate must be a resident of the United States, a resident must be a resident of Elkader, Iowa, and are at least 18 years old on or before election day.

Elkader city elections use the nomination by petition method. That means there are no primaries or run-offs. Whomever gets the most votes is the winning candidate.

Those interested in running can contact the City Clerk at 245-2098 or the County Auditor at 245-1106 with questions or for copies of the forms.

Drive-Up Drop Box for Utility Bill Customers

See a map of the new drive-up drop-box location
The City of Elkader is announcing a new convenience for utility bill customers – a drive-up drop box. Located in the alley behind the City Hall/Opera House, on the northwest corner of the city parking lot, customers can drop off their bill payment in a secure box without having to leave their cars. The current drop box is located to the right of the City Hall door but some customers have problems navigating the steep curb to get to the sidewalk. The new box will provide greater flexibility for customers. As always, direct withdrawal from your bank account is also available. Read information about the autopay procedure and get a direct payment preauthorization agreement form using the links below.
