Downtown Historic District Project and Architectural Survey Summary

The City of Elkader, in cooperation with Main Street Elkader, has retained a historic preservation consultant to complete a historic and architectural survey of the Downtown. Funding for the project has been provided by FEMA to compensate the community for the loss of buildings in the south end of town following the 2008 flood. Approximately 80 buildings will be in the district which will extend along Main Street and 1st Street as well as intersecting streets. Final boundaries have not been determined.

Marlys Svendsen with Svendsen Tyler, Inc of Sarona, Wisconsin is the consultant working on the project. A native Iowan, she has more than 30 years of experience and has successfully completed dozens of National Register nominations in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.

Ms. Svendsen has completing exterior photographs of all of the buildings and prepared Iowa Site Inventory Forms for each building describing their history and architectural features. She has also prepared the Elkader Historic District nomination for the National Register of Historic Places. Digital copies of the site inventory forms and the historic district nomination documents are available below.
